Home Theater Design

When thinking of a dedicated theater for your home, it’s important to think about the size and shape of the room, lighting placement, and your seating setup.  The shape of the room is important for having ideal acoustics and aesthetic appeal.  Angled walls or changes in the plane of the wall can create pockets or reflexions of sound that can reflect the sound away from the seating area or even trap sound and cause unwanted resonances.  Having a rectangular shaped room with a relatively low ceiling typically provides the best setup for the sound.  This hall way like setup allows the sound to be projected at you and around to give you the sense that you are in the movie and in the middle of the action.

Acoustic treatments are sound dampening panels that are mounted on the walls and ceilings and help absorb sound reflections.  At Synergy we are authorized dealers of Kinetics noise control products to design your home theater for beautiful acoustics and aesthetics.    Home theater room surfaces with full acoustical coverage create the ultimate listening experience. A properly-designed room provides an excellent balance of reflective, absorptive and diffusive acoustical treatments.

Speaker placement and quality is crucial when designing a theater and should be a high priority when designing your room.    At Synergy we use the latest technology and offer a room analysis to  know exactly where the speakers should be placed for optimal sound.

Lighting design is important to keep lights off the screen to prevent the picture from being washed out.   Wall sconces are typically used to provide more light in the room as well as create a cozy aesthetic feel.

Seating layout also needs to be considered in the design of the room to ensure you have enough space for the seating.  Theater style seating is common where multiple rows of seating are elevated above the row in front them. How many seats you want can determine width and depth of the room to accommodate for how many seats you want per row and how many rows you want.  We typically see theaters with 2 rows of seating and typically 4-5 chairs per row.  Another thing to consider is if you want reclining chairs, these chairs provide a lot of comfort but can also add depth to room.  When these chairs recline they become longer as the foot rest extends so having adequate space is important to keep your feet off the head of the person in front of you.
